Big Tech: Virtual 4 Ever

Bye, bye live. Committing to an online future, Apple’s WWDC 2022 event will be almost exclusively online. However, the company unveiled plans to host a “special day” for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6, which will include screenings of the keynote videos. 

Apple’s decision to remain virtual is not an isolated one. A Protocol story called “RIP, IRL Events” indicates that Meta (nee Facebook) is tabling its F8 event (too busy focusing on building the metaverse). And Google chimed in with their plans to turn most of Google I/O in mid-May into a free live-streamed event with only a “limited live audience.” A trend worth noting.
